17 May How to Keep Your Southern Vintage Furniture Looking Great
Southern Vintage is known for our live edge tables, beautiful pieces of furniture created from minimally-treated slabs of wood. We preserve the curves and imperfections nature has left in the edges of the wood, creating one-of-a-kind, functional art. You can choose between our selection of end tables, desks, dining tables and our custom piece service. Whether you buy a custom piece or fall in love with one of our pre-made pieces, you’ll end up with a stunning stable that will create impressions no matter where you put it.
Once you receive your table, it’s up to you to keep it looking great. Thanks to the work we do to make our tables stain- and water-proof, your job isn’t hard at all. Read on to learn how easy it is to make your table shine year after year!
Dust It Off
You’ll get wonderful dusting results if you use a microfiber cloth on your live edge table. Microfiber cloths are particularly good at lifting dust away rather than pushing it around, which means they won’t scratch the surface as much. They are effective in the grooves left on live edges. Keeping your table dust-free will ensure its surface remains clear and beautiful.
Polish seals and minimizes scratches and preserves your table’s luster. All-natural polishes are best. We recommend you apply polish and buff with a dry cloth once a week for the first four weeks. Afterward, you only need to polish the table once a month.
Because polish leaves a residue, be careful to keep it on the smooth part of your table. If it gets into the cracks and pits, it can start to gather. The resulting buildup will make your table look old and grungy.
Keep Heat and Moisture Away
Wood responds to heat and moisture even if it is coated. Never set hot pans or dishes directly on the wood. Instead, use trivets to keep that hot surface up and away. Anything that is hot and moist, like a pizza box, should be kept off the wood entirely. Lastly, if you spill food, go ahead and wipe it up immediately using a damp cloth at first and a dry cloth next.
If you are diligent about these three steps, your live edge tabletop will look like new for years to come. You may notice that the top gets little cracks or slightly changes shapes depending on the season. Don’t worry. It is simply the wood responding to differing levels of heat and humidity and is completely normal.
